Forced All Too Willingly

Forced All Too Willingly

Invite and repel
Said the spider. That’s my game.
I beckon.
You look away.
I make a gesture.
You advance.
I study my fingernails.
You press further.
I sigh and sink back in my chair.
You are careless.
You take one step too many.
Ensnared.
You are mine. I eat you.

Bolt Hole

From Enough for a Book, published in 2016.

Bolt Hole

The basket of clothes
to be ironed. The task
suddenly irresistible. I must
go home
now
and take care of the clothes.
They will be waiting for me. Please
accept my apologies
perhaps next time
the lure of my basement
laundry room
will not be so strong.
Perhaps I will not get so
homesick.

Cared For

From Enough for a Book, published in 2016.

Cared For

Up the half-flight of stairs
around the thick stone and stucco wall
down the hallway.
Still the sounds manage to make their way out here:
voices in a rhythm of rise and fall
occasional laughs
coming closer and clearer
then retreating
behind the noise of the air conditioner
the ducts humming loudly as they
concentrate on their own work.
Every so often
a metallic thud. The screech of chair legs
on the linoleum floor. The sound of a spring stretching
behind the closed elevator doors. I am content
in the company of the unseen.

Underlooked

From the collection Look Winter in the Face, 2015.

Underlooked

The concrete underside of the highway bridge is
a clean spare span of roof to
the underpass
an outdoor room
with no one spending more than five seconds in it if that
and gone.
Seems like such a slap in the face
of a space with a lot of dignity
that does its job. Looks good. Ought to be appreciated.
Never mind.
Cars pass above the underpass and cars pass through it and
that’s it
except for the pigeon
startled up into the darkness
behind the Y-shaped supports
and out into the air
and me
I drive on my way
five seconds at a time
not letting this five seconds
go unremarked

A Full-Length Novel

From the collection Generous With the Details, 2017.

A Full-Length Novel

I am reading. The book rests on my lap.
As does the cat. The cat was there first.
Now the book
and the cat
occupy my lap. The cat purrs
while the heroine cries
Both of them sitting on my lap.
Three’s a crowd, I’m beginning to feel.

Checked In

From the collection published in 2017, Generous With the Details.

Checked In

The cat fits
just exactly
on the pillow
of the bed
in the guest room
which is why
he chooses to believe
I have said to him
at some time or another
Be my guest
and settle in
glaring at me
fur ruffled from sleep
until I back out of the room
apologizing
for how I’ve intruded
on a guest
even though he lives here
it is of course his decision about that
too.

Hold

From Generous With the Details, published in 2017.

Hold

Oh, you
just listen to all that
malice
issuing out in a flow
like lava from a volcano
inching over the terrain
hissing as it meets
opposition

Strategic Plan

From the collection Autumn Opens a Door, 2015.

Strategic Plan

A calm appraisal
and deliberate action
is necessary for complete evaluation of
and purchases drawn from
the apples in the bin
and it will not do to
grab the ones on top
just because they are.
