From Enough for a Book, published in 2016.

A bouquet of yellow tulips
lay on the empty seat beside her
all the way down to the city
Two hours. She took them up
when we arrived
their stems wrapped in wet paper towels
and aluminum foil. Flowers from her yard,
then, not bought at the station.
Flowers from home.

  1. What a lovely gift to receive, flowers cut from someone’s own garden. When commuting home from central London, my husband used to bring me incredibly cheap end-of-the-day bananas from the train station market. That’s romance right there.

  2. Thank you. Since it was based on something I saw in life, I imposed my own story on it, but there was something about those flowers that really struck my heart.
