and frowns at the book.

I see the kids at the community college when they are studying and many of them do just this gesture, it made me think it might be something we all do when trying to understand something written, the urge to touch it or point at it to focus (sometimes a pencil, sometimes a finger, sometimes a knitting needle, paintbrush, fork – depending on the book’s subject!)
