Cake Lady

From Enough for a Book, published in 2016.

Cake Lady

Lady
holding a cake
from a bakery
in a bakery cake-box
fifteen inches in length
heavy
a plastic window in the lid
to see the cake.
Train
full of people
every seat taken
everyone looking at the lady
and the cake
coming into the car.
People
wondering
how this situation is going to work out.
The thought printed on each face
plain to see.
Man
gets up from his seat
gestures
to the lady
and the cake
who take the seat.
Train
moves out of the station
smoothly
so as not to jostle
the cake.

  1. Yes, my husband told me about a lady bringing a cake on to the commuter train in the morning one time, and in the morning the mood is subdued and people a little quiet. And then the situation was saved…nice things happen every day. We must remember that.

  2. I think they are much more common than meannesses, but we don’t notice them the same way. I do not feel I make any impact on the world but I hope I can be kind, and this story (which really happened, my husband told me about it) reminds me that anyone can make things a little better.
