Hard Truth

From Spring Cleaning, published in 2015.

Hard Truth

The indifferent stones rolled under my running feet I fell.
Some days later
I found
the indifferent stones
had broken a bone in my foot.
The indifferent stones.
I recognize
I must understand their ways
because I am not divine
and because
they are indifferent.

Mail art postcard, 7/16.

  1. I based this poem on my own experience – about two years ago I fell several times while running and also (not related to the falls but running related) ended up with a broken foot. Each time I went down, I had this moment of shock that I was on the ground and I clearly felt – betrayed! by the rocks and by my own self in navigating them. And then I’d realize – it’s all indifference, they are rocks and of course don’t care one way or the other! Got me to thinking.
