Tanka 24

Open the window
just a crack. Let the chill night air
squeeze in. Let the voice
of the last cricket fill up
the dark bedroom. Let sleep come.

Clay tile, 4″ x 4″, January, 2016.

  1. Thank you. The autumn was difficult for our family, when I wrote this. It is how I felt at night when I hoped for some rest and things to be a bit better the next day.

  2. This poem taps into one of the few areas of chalk and cheese conflict between my husband and I – he would love to be able to sleep with the windows open but due to various neuroses and seasonal allergies I can only sleep with the bedroom windows closed. While he would read this poem and find it to be calming and relaxing, I must confess I read it and it made me feel a little uneasy. Neurotic.

  3. Yes, thank you, we have ups and downs and yet if you keep going things improve. My husband has had a lot of improvement in the last few days and so I feel less disoriented! Thank you for asking.
