Dangerous Waters

From Autumn Opens a Door, published fall 2015, a poetry collection.

Dangerous Waters

The shoppers maneuver their carts
among the islands of produce.
They are
Ship captains
navigating crowded and
uncertain seas. Taking on cargo
overloads their concentration leaving little
for course-plotting.
Crews
are incompetent or inexperienced and often double as
Passengers
who as a group are on the young side and preoccupied
with their own pleasures. They are
prone to falling overboard.
In these waters,
Sailor, all I can say is:
Beware.

Grocery carts in the cart corral - or ships in the harbor, depending on your point of view. 2015.
