Ambitions Unfulfilled

Ambitions Unfulfilled

When I went down into the basement
to the laundry room
to check on the clothes in the washer
I found a dead mouse, courtesy of our cat,
lying on the floor
unmoving
in that never-going-to-breathe-again kind of stillness
sprawled out on his stomach
like a little mouse Superman
only not flying, of course,
and never even going to try it, now.

  1. I love the image of the dead mouse in a Superman pose. Since my current cats are indoor cats, the most they catch is a fly. However, I have had previous cats who used to bring home mice, frogs, and bats.

      • So far we’ve had no four legged interlopers into our house. We had field mice break into our attic in our last house in Scotland but they didn’t come into the living space. I felt bad trapping them as they were adorable but they were just too annoying to leave be. Cats might have been handy then.
