Easy Work

From Catch Up With Summer, published 2015.

Easy Work

Clear distinct taps
at even intervals.
The corrugated metal drainpipe
in its down time now
after the thundershower when
things weren’t measured in drips then, I’ll tell you
the drainpipe very busy managing
the torrent gushing out into the yard
from off the roof.
Now
Rain’s a memory
There’s plenty of time
for the drainpipe to savor each drop
let each one strike
the elbow at the bottom of the run
listen to each clear distinct tap
and
watch the accumulation aggregate into
a wet spot on the sidewalk

  1. Thank you. We have a drain pipe next to our garage that for some reason really catches my attention, all the time. Almost like it has a desire for being noticed. Anyway, this poem is a tribute to that unnoticed part of the house that is always there but who cares? I do!
