Miens, Roles, and Guises

Another housecleaning poem.

Miens, Roles, and Guises

nice fat old lady
round and squat
wearing an apron and taking in
the confidences of
young men
it’s their love troubles, of course,
they have no others,
advising and laughing and chiding them
for being so serious about it all.
retired old-timers
propped up against the wall or maybe
holding it up, as the well-worn joke goes,
exchanging glances and saying nothing
because they don’t need to
built solid and compact some time ago
now showing neglect and lack of repair
with too much to do
not enough to do it with and
no time for fat retired old timers ladies young men.
I’ve got time
I stay still
I pay attention.
