Dislike As One

Dislike As One

Swollen,
sleepy-eyed,
the weary gray morning-face
of a worn-out man
looks out the window
through a wary gap in the curtains. I see him
enough of him to know
he does not see me
And so he does not bother to hide
the expression of disappointed distaste
that the Wednesday morning –
damp dim foggy –
provokes
In a quick movement
he wrenches the curtains wider
Jamming them in symmetrical crunched-up bunches
to the ends of the rod
So as to underline things:
We have to go along together
But I don’t have to like you
