What the Mailbox Reveals

I wrote this poem on a piece of mail art, I think, and sent it to my son some time ago.

Pulled out of the mailbox

Oddly formal,
with the address typed as it was,
neatly positioned
I doubted the sender
but turned the card over
the message
set me straight
Hello, son, it said
Your mother loves you
and she’s not afraid
to tell you
and the world
in a postcard
newspaper ad
scrawl it on the sidewalk in chalk
but she would draw the line
at a van driving around
with a loudspeaker.
